The Anglo Saxon period lasted for about six centuries, from the arrival of German invaders from the continent during the early fifth century AD to the Norman Conquest of 1066. This was a time of major political and social upheaval which lead to major changes in almost all aspects of everyday life. Most early settlers live by mainly farming. From the late eighth century onwards, the Anglo-Saxons suffered repeated attacks by The Vikings. Life expectancy for Anglo Saxons appeared to be in the thirties because of the frequent wars and disease. Their main social division was between the slaves an the free.

William, Duke of Normandy, was crowned King of England on 25 December 1066. At first his position was at no means secure. One method the Normans used to control the Saxons was by building castles. The Normans soon began building stone castle, which lead to the building of the Tower if London in 1078. June 1070 King William made a treaty with King Swein and the Danes left. The Saxons kept on fighting in the Fens but by 1071 they were forced to surrender. Hereward escaped and William was now in control of all of England. By this time almost al Saxon nobles had lost all their land. William " the conqueror" was a ruthless man and died in 1087.

Richard I (September 8, 1157 – April 6, 1199) was King of England from 1189 to 1199. He was often referred to as Richard the Lionheart. Richard was terrible king and only cared for his soldiers, but he was a brave man. He fought great battles and showed a burning passion for war. Richard won a great reputation in the capture of Acre, but quarrelled with his allies who left him and went home.

The Magna Carta was written and designed to reduce the powers held by the King. It was a series of written promises between the King and his subjects. The Magna Carta is considered to be the foundations of the constitutional government in England because it led to the great change in the power given to the King. It demonstrated that the power of the king will be limited.
